What are the hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are swollen or dilated veins on the anal or rectal area. Some of them are located inside the rectum (internal hemorrhoids) and some other under the skin around the anus (external hemorrhoids).

What are their causes?

Hemorrhoids appear as a consequence of an increase of pressure on the veins of the anus or the rectum. There are several causes but the most common ones are excessive exertion during bowel movement (defecation), pregnancy, hereditary conditions, aging, chronic constipation or diarrhea.

How do you get hemorrhoids?

Almost everybody suffers from hemorrhoids at some point in their life, but some things make them more likely to appear. People whose parents had hemorrhoids are potentially more prone to it. Pregnant women usually get hemorrhoids as a consequence of the weight they gain with the baby and after childbirth. Obesity, excessive force while defecating – constipation in many occasions –, being sitting on the toilet for a long time or carrying heavy things can make the matter worse.

What are the symptoms of hemorrhoids?

The symptoms of hemorrhoids, both internal and external include:

  • Pain after defecating
  • Red, shiny blood in the feces, toilet paper or the toilet itself
  • Rectal or anal itching and burning
  • Hard lumps around the anus

What kinds of treatments are available?

What does the surgery involve?

Laser Coagulation Surgery (or infrared surgery) is commonly used to treat those hemorrhoids that aren’t visible, internal hemorrhoids that is, and it is intended to stop the blood flow by burning the veins that transport the blood with a special device.

What is the recovery period like and how long does it last?

Surgery usually takes 2-3 weeks of painful, annoying recovery. If the procedure went well, the patient goes back to normal on the 3rd week. For those patients that are not so lucky, the pain derived from hemorrhoidectomy can last for months. Besides, it can present several complications on the postoperative period that cannot be overlooked, such as infections, bleedings, unhealed wounds, narrowing of the anal channel, anal fissures, urinary retention (which may require a new surgery to fix it), anal fistula, etc. Besides, these procedures do not guarantee that hemorrhoids will not reappear.
